Should You Stain Your Hardwood Floors or Not?

Should You Stain Your Hardwood Floors or Not
  • Flooring

If you have hardwood floors at home, you’ve probably asked yourself at one point if you should stain your floors. Staining your floor can instantly give your house a renewed look, but it’s not without its share of disadvantages. Before you call us in for a staining job, this nifty guide should help you decide whether you should stain your hardwood floors or not.
You should stain your floor if…

#1 - Your floor is made of common wood

If your floor is composed of common, lower-quality wood, the best decision is to stain it. Floors like oak, beech, ash, hickory, or other common wood can be easily upgraded with good staining. A stain can give your timber floors an exquisite vibe, and will easily make them look more elegant and sophisticated. Staining your floor can achieve the look of more expensive wood like mahogany, walnut, cherry, or maple.

#2 - You want a major upgrade on a tight budget

You might have been wanting a major upgrade for your home but you’re on a tight budget. Instead of replacing your whole floor altogether, this is where staining can be a good option. Staining will make your floor look new and will increase your property’s value.

#3 - You want to go for a darker colour palette

You can use staining as a way to match your floor with your furniture at home, especially if you follow a darker colour palette. This will give your area a more cohesive look and it will easily make your house look tidier, more organised, and even immaculate as everything blends together.

#4 - Your floors are already heavily damaged

Damages such as water stains, plant stains, scratches, and pet markings will leave your floor with an unpolished and vandalised look. It makes your timber floors look weathered and overall makes them seem unsightly. When your hardwood floors are heavily damaged, you can choose to stain to mask the appearance of said damages.

You should NOT stain your floor if…

#1 - It’s in great to perfect condition

If your floor is newly installed and is still in great condition, you can put off staining them for the moment. Especially if you’re already using exquisite woods such as mahogany, walnut, cherry, and maple, the best option is to not stain them anymore unless they become damaged later on.

#2 - It can still be restored by deep cleaning

While stains can leave us in a panic, sometimes a good deep cleaning can still restore our hardwood floors to their former glory. Especially for newer stains, a good mopping can still eliminate the marks. Soaking a rag with hydrogen peroxide and using it to clean your floor can also work for deep cleaning.

If you’ve tried this and the stains still won’t budge, give us a call at 1300 767 909 so we can look into it. If you have deeper marks and still want to avoid staining, floor sanding can also be an option.

#3 - The type of wood that you have doesn’t stain easily

Woods such as birch, maple, pine, or fir don’t stain as easily as other hardwoods. This is because they have small pores, so any sort of stain cannot easily penetrate their material. Woods that are rich in sap are also resistant to staining. Instead of staining, you can opt to get them coated with a clear finish for a more polished and shiny look.
